Custom content for Napoleon: Total War

ACW: The American Civil War is a free-to-play game utility created for the strategy game Napoleon: Total War. This mod lets you relieve the American Civil War, which, despite lasting for only four years, was a defining moment in the entire history of the United States. Enjoy a massive collection of historical maps and scenarios, and play with or against historical armies.

If you’re a fan of strategy games beyond ACW: The American Civil War, feel free to check Rome: Total War or Total War: ARENA. These games offer a similar gameplay style but adopt different historical eras.

Relive the Civil War

In ACW: The American Civil War, you get to experience key points from the American Civil War, which started on April 12, 1861 and formally ended on April 9, 1865. It was fought between northern and southern states after decades of tension over differences of opinion and policy over rights, slavery, and other issues. While the game doesn’t dive much into the ideologies involved, the aesthetics and scale are spot-on.

Some of the scenarios included in the mod are the battles of Manassas, Chickamauga, and Gettysburg—major skirmishes between the Union and the Confederacy. This reflects in the custom-made maps and the accurate factions you can play. More importantly, key figures from both sides are available as in-game generals—Ulysses Grant, Robert E. Lee, Joshua Chamberlain, and more. They have customized stats that match their strengths as recorded by history.

However, this mod doesn’t integrate and install easily, unlike other add-ons. Players have reported issues with the custom sound files not working properly. Also, depending on the version you have installed, name tags for units do not display at all. However, the developers offer an active game community through Discord, allowing players to ask questions and receive customized guides, offering helpful advice for players and other modders.

A must-have historical mod

If you’re a fan of historical strategy games, ACW: The American Civil War is a must-have. It’s an accurate representation of a pivotal point in history that not only shapes the United States, but the rest of the world as a result. Use custom factions, take control of historical commanders, and simulate your own Civil War scenario. It also has a supportive community. However, it suffers from a few bugs.
